About SE Tax Calculators
Free tax tools built for the self-employed, by people who understand the gig economy.
Our Mission
Self-employment taxes are confusing. When you work for yourself, you're responsible for calculating and paying taxes that would normally be handled by an employer. The 15.3% self-employment tax, quarterly estimated payments, deduction rules, mileage tracking, retirement contribution limits — it adds up to a lot of complex math that most people were never taught.
We built SE Tax Calculators to change that. Our tools break down the math into simple, clear answers so you can plan ahead and avoid surprises at tax time. No account required, no data collection, no fees. Just free tools that work.
Who We Built This For
The gig economy has exploded. Millions of Americans now earn income through freelance work, independent contracting, driving for rideshare apps, selling online, and running small side businesses. If you receive a 1099-NEC or 1099-K instead of a W-2, these tools are for you. Whether you drive for Uber on weekends, freelance on Upwork, run an Etsy shop, or consult independently — understanding your tax burden is essential.
We built these tools because we saw how many self-employed workers were caught off guard by their first tax bill. The "quarterly estimated tax" requirement catches many people by surprise. Our calculators help you estimate what you owe throughout the year, so you can set aside the right amount and stay compliant with the IRS.
How Our Calculators Work
All calculations run entirely in your browser using JavaScript. We use the official IRS rates and brackets for the 2026 tax year, including the 15.3% self-employment tax rate (12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare), the $176,100 Social Security wage base, all seven federal income tax brackets, standard deductions by filing status, and the 72.5 cents per mile standard mileage rate.
Our quarterly payment calculator helps you estimate how much to pay each quarter to avoid IRS underpayment penalties. Our deduction finder helps you identify common write-offs you might be missing. And our mileage tracker calculates your business driving deduction at the current IRS rate.
Privacy by Design
We believe your financial data should stay yours. Every tool on this site runs client-side — your income numbers, expenses, and personal information never leave your browser and are never sent to any server. We don't use cookies, we don't track you, and we don't have accounts. Your data stays private.
Accuracy and Disclaimer
Our calculators use standard IRS formulas and current-year tax rates. However, every taxpayer's situation is unique. Factors like state taxes, tax credits, depreciation, and multiple income sources can affect your actual tax liability. Our tools are designed for estimation purposes — always consult a qualified tax professional for advice specific to your circumstances.
Open Source Spirit
We believe essential financial tools should be free and accessible to everyone. That's why we built SE Tax Calculators as a free resource with no paywalls, no premium tiers, and no upselling. The site is supported through Google AdSense advertising, which allows us to keep the tools free for everyone who needs them.
